The Rich History Behind Our Owego Antique Center

The story of our building is almost as fascinating as the items we sell inside it. Our store is located at 43-45 Lake Street, inside the old J.J. Newberry Building.

From a Bustling Department Store to a Quiet Era

As the J.J. Newberry department chain expanded across the country, the company built this wonderful Mid-Century Modern building in the late 1950s. It was a massive addition to an already vibrant town, and crowds literally lined up around the block for the grand opening.

J.J. Newberry flourished for many years, acting as a central hub for the community. Various changes to the retail marketplace eventually caused the business to close its doors in the 1980s. After that, the building went through several different phases and occupants. Then, in 2011, the Susquehanna River caused a devastating flood in downtown Owego. The historic building suffered water damage and sat empty for two years. It was just waiting for someone to bring it back to life.

A New Beginning in 2013

That is when Jim and Cornelia Mead stepped forward. They saw the potential of the space and began making plans to create a premier antique mall Owego NY could be proud of.

On February 14th, 2013, Early Owego Antique Center officially opened its doors. Just like the J.J. Newberry opened in 1958, crowds of people eagerly lined up to see the newly restored space. Today, the store is still going strong. Customers travel from all over the world to visit our welcoming marketplace and find amazing treasures.
