Early Owego Antique Center is a multi-dealer marketplace owned and operated by Jim and Cornelia Mead. Since opening our doors, we have become a cherished destination for shoppers traveling from all over the world. A Walk Through History: The J.J. Newberry Building

The items inside our shop are not the only things with a story to tell. The building itself is a wonderful piece of local history.

From Mid-Century Retail to Devastating Floods

As the J.J. Newberry department chain expanded across the country, and the company built a beautiful Mid-Century Modern building right here in Owego's historic downtown. When it opened in the late 1950s, crowds eagerly lined up down the street. It was a wonderful addition to our great town. The store flourished for many years.

Eventually, marketplace changes led to the business closing in the 1980s. Over the next few decades, the building saw various different occupants. Then, in 2011, the Susquehanna River caused a devastating flood in downtown Owego. Like many nearby structures, the J.J.

Newberry building suffered severe water damage. It sat empty for two years, simply yearning to come back to life.

A Beautiful Rebirth in 2013

That is exactly when Jim and Cornelia Mead stepped forward. Jim has a lifelong love for collecting, and the couple decided to take the plunge to create a new business. They made plans to restore the building and bring retail joy back to the space. On February 14, 2013, the Early Owego Antique Center opened its doors. Just like the original J.J. Newberry opened in 1958, crowds of excited people lined up to see the newly restored space. Today, more than 11 years later, the center is still going incredibly strong.
